Quick Take: Signs the Universe is Telling you to Slow Down

We live in a world where everything is rushed. I hear it from the university students I work with all the time, they just want school to be done and over with. They just want the well paying job, with the family, the travelling, and the kids (or fur babies). I hear it with clients that try to rush the healing process. I hear it in my own head, “I just have to get through Monday I just have to get through Tuesday. I just have to get through Wednesday, etc. etc. and then it will be the weekend and I can have a break. The thing is, then the weekend comes and we fill it with extracurriculars, chores, appointments, extra shifts, and family visits and while all of that is sometimes necessary, we generally lack space to slow down. And more than that, and likely a topic for another post, slowing down or sitting still often requires us to sit with the anxiety that a lot of us feel when we aren’t being productive.

I’m writing this post today because now more than ever I feel like I need the reminder, as I sit on my couch for what feels like the millionth hour, trying to soothe a fussy baby. It’s OK to sit still, it’s OK to slow down, and it’s OK that the laundry that I was so optimistic about folding, will not get done.

I thought I’d take this time to jot down some of the signs that I believe are the universe telling me to slow down as a chronic overachiever and product driven person.

Signs the universe wants me to slow down:

  • My toddler wanting to buckle herself in her car seat on her own

  • Getting my pocket stuck on a door handle

  • My oldest trying to tell me a story from earlier that day

  • Someone in front of me driving the exact speed limit

  • My newborn only willing to sleep on my chest or in my arms

  • Waiting for the point of a friends long story

Maybe the universe puts these “inconveniences” throughout our day to remind us to slow down and be present - especially for the things that matter. So if you find yourself in the same boat, I encourage you to embrace the present moment and if you too stub your toe while running late to get out the door, quietly tell yourself to slow down, there is likely nothing THAT important.
